Elpida plans to boost 90nm made DDR2 proportion to over 50% in 4Q

Japan-based Elpida Memory will increase its DRAM capacity to approximately 90,000 12-inch wafers per month, perhaps by the fourth quarter of 2007. Elpida will also boost its 90nm DDR2 production proportion to over 50% next quarter, according to Elpida Hong Kong president Toshiharu Namimatsu at a recent product launch held in Hong Kong.

According to the company roadmap, its Japan Hiroshima E300 fab will attain a minimum capacity of 45,000 12-inch wafers in the fourth quarter. As Area 2 of the E300 fab can attain a full capacity of 45,000 wafers, the total 12-inch wafer processing capacity may surpass 90,000 wafers (equivalent to over 200,000 8-inch wafers) by the fourth quarter of 2007. All the expanded capacity will be allocated to consumer electronics and communication related memory production, the company stated.

In order to lower costs to stimulate buying incentives for DDR2 memory, Elpida will ramp its 90nm-made DDR2 proportion to over 50% by the end of this year, up from 10-15% currently, the company stated. This ratio should further increase upon support from its industry partner, the company noted.
