Would you pay Microsoft to protect Windows?
Microsoft last week announced it would launch a set of anti-virus and anti-spyware products but will enterprises trust the software giant to protect its own products and more importantly, will they pay for the privilege?
Michael Warrilow, director of Sydney-based analyst firm Hydrasight, believes Microsoft is in a 'catch 22' situation because enterprises will not want to pay for products that are designed to protect them from failings in Microsoft's other products. "They talk about trustworthy computing but if you can trust them, should you need to have these new [security] products anyway? I don't think they are ready to trust Microsoft in this space yet. They are going to continue to trust companies like Symantec and McAfee," said Warillow. __________ Read More / Source: ZDNet |

Absurd. Create a product that is riped with security leaks and holes and then sell ANOTHER product to "protect" those holes? *Claps hands sarcastically*

What makes you think that this product wouldn't also be flawed?

My concern is that despite the fact that other companies have a "big lead" on them in terms of experience in this field, the name "Microsoft" may get people to buy the product and kill off all the "smaller" alternatives. Personally, I'm not even using a "major" player AV in terms of market share. I use NOD32 because I like the small footprint and heuristics.

I can see this as being a problem as well. I see it being installed with future windows installations and causing the same problems as the media player did (at least in Europe). For the masses, its probably OK, as people need virus and spyware protection and most dont have it, but will big M leave the rest of us alone?

Why would I pay them for something they have proven they are blatantly incompetent of doing?

Hah, I barely use anything that comes bundled with windows... the list:
msconfig services.msc gpedit.msc command volume control character map I'm pretty sure that's all of them, I don't even use explorer as a shell or anything.
