Iomega intros StorCenter NAS with built-in media server

Iomega today announced an addition to its StorCenter NAS lineup that includes a built-in UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) A/V network media server.

Initially available in 160 GByte and 250 GByte models, the new StorCenter lineup will also have a 1 TB version added "early next year". The products support up to 25 Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux clients with password-protected user accounts and assignable user-directory quotas.

The new StorCenters feature a 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN connection and two USB 2.0 ports that can support up to four additional USB 2.0 storage devices and two USB 2.0 printers attached to a single StorCenter drive via user-supplied USB hubs. Both versions feature 7200 RPM drives and the 250GB model comes with an 8MB cache.

The built-in media server will support streaming of movies, music and still-image slide shows directly to home A/V systems equipped with a UPnP-compliant digital media adapter. Iomega did not say whether they would be marketing such an adapter.
