Little tip the first card was made in 87 and is the Ega Wonder. Vga Wonder followed that. After that was the Mach 8.

I actually got into a release date sheet from ATI themselves. I do not plan on even entering this contest.
What ever they put out prior to '87 was not under the ATi name or the ATi moniker. Here is a history page for you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATI_Technologies |

<sigh> Ahem... "In 1985, ATI introduced its first graphics board product, the GRAPHICS SOLUTION, based on the Company’s proprietary 16800 graphics controller, which was capable of supporting all of the then current graphics interfaces and PC monitors. Prior to the introduction of products such as the GRAPHICS SOLUTION, a specific graphics board was required to interface with each type of PC monitor and with each type of software. Improvements in image resolution and colour definition were subsequently achieved by ATI’s EGA WONDER and VGA WONDER series of products which supported the then current EGA and VGA industry standards for PC graphics." Press HERE, and goto page 6, and take note of the http address.

In my native tongue prior means before. Meaning prior to the GRAPHICS SOLUTION. ROUND THREE? |

The paragraph means before ATi released boards based on the 16800 there was no unifying graphics solution that could service every type of currently available display. Round 3 of what? You're wrong, hes right. Companies don't just forget about products they've released, as much as some might want to. The Graphics Solution was ATi's first series of cards, thats all there is to it.

---------------- spanspace: "Prior to the introduction of products such as the GRAPHICS SOLUTION.." Prior to, as in BEFORE the Graphics Solution card (which, btw, is a CGA/MDA ISA card) there were no ATI cards. It was their first card. Period. The only reason I even posted was to not confuse the issue for other entries. The Graphics Solution card was the first one put out by ATI in '85. At first they sold this to Commodore in bulk (can't remember if it was the chip only though, but it was almost exclusively), and at cost in order to survive, but they did sell a card to consumers as an ATI card. We bought them as such (read below). The EGA wonder came after that in '87, and was their first full production card (but again, not their first card). After that was the VGA Wonder in '88. Just so that you know we used to buy these cards directly from ATIs distributor, Ahon.. or something.. can't recall the exact name (it's been 20 years). For a long time all ATI cards were sold through this distributor. You couldn't buy them directly from ATI. Years later that distributor, seeing that they could make more money as an OEM, negotiated a deal with ATI to make their OEM cards for them. So, they shut their doors down, and started up their OEM business. Guess who those guys are? Sapphire Technologies. And btw, if you actually read this entire thread you will have seen entrants from people that still have a Graphics Solution card. In particular read page 12 which has numerous responses to the age of one guys card, and Zardons response about it being the "oldest" card up to that point. Know what? Like I said, I only posted to correct ya, not to get into a debate about it. Read the whole thread, and you will see that people do have a Graphics Solution "standalone" card that was made in 1985, which is obviously before the EGA Wonder which came out 2 years later. Hell, if I really dig I might even find one here for you.

Some really intesresting history info. found through this thread.
I did have an old VGA wonder card I used in an old 8086 system with the old ISA/EISA and VLB bus (although I think if I remember it wasn't until my 2086 that I had a system with a VLB slot and a whole 20MB hard disk! haha ... long since thrown out though after throwing away piles of stuff. Oh well... Guess the mach 32 I still have at this point won't cut it to win this one :P |

Damn! I came across this thread a few hours too late; story of my life.
(Although... Zardon said no more entries by email...) Anyway, here's a scan of a card that my friend gave me back in 1996 for those of you who weren't even alive back then—and Zardon. It's an MDA card (that's black-and-white for you kids.) Here

Ooh, I've got a real treat for you guys. I'm going to see if I can find an old VIVO board I've got somewhere. It used a small ribbon cable—like and IDE cable but with fewer pins—to connect to the feature connector on VGA boards. It had an RCA connector in and another one out, plus SVHS in/out. It was made by AITech who is still around and does not seem to have anything to do with ATI. It was used in DOS and Windows 3.0, and had a driver—I still have a copy on my hard drive right now. I just checked the driver file and it's called ProVGA/TV Plus. Wow, it even had a DLL and instructions on how to write software for it. Nice!
It's a really, really, really long board, in fact it did not even fit inside most cases. I'll probably have to do two scans and splice.

The competition has closed and im working through almost 850 entries for this! Ill leave this thread open for you guys to chat.
The oldest cards we received were variants of the Ati Graphics solution Plus circa 1985 so anyone who has submitted an entry for this will be in with a shot. Im just conferring with ATI to make sure this is all cleared and verified by them. |

Also I meant to say according to ATI there was an older card than the Graphics Solution, that being the ATI Color Emulation Card, but no one entered with one of these.......

Was that card ever available for purchace? It's strange how noone remembers it, and I think none of the pages that were linked to in this thread mention it. Could ATi treat us with a photo of it?
