Ye Be F.E.A.R. Pirates
October 17, 2005 - A rather poorly written thread by a moderator on the VUG forums proclaims that the majority of gamers reporting poor performance, bugs, crashes, and BSODs with the retail code of F.E.A.R. are pirates, and as such that is the cause of their issues, which is obviously twaddle.
Here's some of VUG-Greg's ranting, minus the 50pt font: Guys - reality check time. Right now we have a good number of posters coming onto the board saying that they are having performance issues with the game. Even when they have good specs or where able to play the demo's well. THAT's because they have pirated versions!!! I've check this myself the requirements of the pirated version badly hurt system performance. Greg goes on to state that the game is "VERY bug free," although Monolith obviously disagrees as a launch-day patch has been created. Thanks Per. Update: The thread has now been nuked from existence; with regards to the patch I'm told it's 22MB and will be launched at 9PM tonight. Update #2: VUG-Greg now offers this apology, although he is still clueless as to how the warez version of the game he claims to have tested works. Update #3: Here are the F.E.A.R. v1.01 patch notes (see full story) __________ Read More / Source: Voodoo Extreme |

"At no time was this meant to say that there were not legitimate users trying to find help. I was only addressing the posts from pirates."
Some apology, hmm? I was reading the forums at the time, and he was firing at everyone that was having the above mentioned problems. Not just pirates. |

Yeah I've looked at some of the advice that guy has given to fix the problem. He is almost a moron, but at least he has seen ranting makes you look like a dumbass. Especially online.
I'm glad they are coming out with a patch tonight because I can't buy the game till tomorrow anyway. Edit: Quote:
I have never pirated anything ever, not even music (I get friends to d othat for me so they get the viruses). This is a brand new build and there is no pirating software anywhere near it let alone on it. Demo's don't work any more also. I think the demo's put the software in the user's systems. Maybe I have a pirate related game called FAR CRY , cause u know that has pirates in it, or it has oceans, and thats close enough to prevent me from playing F.E.A.R. Demo's

It's becoming far too common for patches to be released either before or just after a game which is already "complete" hits the stores. Now that I think about it, it's not just games ... I updated to Acronis True Image 9 and they've released 5 patches since I bought it on 9/21. Pretty ridiculous.

there will always be priacy, no matter how much "copy protection" there will always be ways around it. NOTHING is inpregnable. Publishers of all types of media (movies, games, music) need to realise this and give up this copy protection fad, it's just hurting the legit users that pay for their media, and in many cases are unable to use it

copy protection only hastens piracy efforts, as it makes even legit users try cracking things.
What version of secuROM does FEAR have, (just curious) If it's 7, yall are screwed ![]() SecuROM 7 is about as non-invasive as frontal labotomy |

I wish when mags or sites review a game they would say what type of copy protection the game has. For example, I don't want StarForce on my PC and I'd like to know if a game I'm thinking of buying has it ... or any other really invasive CP.

Roflmao
BWAH HA HA!
What a hilarious post, he works for the game developer? I hear there's an opening over at Valve. . . ![]() rasta p.s. BTW, I also totally agree with the poster above who talked about the industry damging itself...totally true. Releasing buggy-ass games just gives people more reason to buy consoles, and adds credence to those who state "PC Gaming is Dying."

kinda makes sense, as it logically seems easier to make an engine with 1 set of known performance and specs to work around to make a really solid base and how it will perform, then entering compatibility code? dunno, i could be way out there though ,cause i have no idea about any kind of coding, so let me know!

It is a HECK of a lot easier to write code for just one platform with one set of HW specs. Sheesh, for example, I remember the middle of this year there were a lotta bugs with City of Heroes but ONLY on ATI-based cards. Honestly, with all the variations of HW that must be supported, despite what anyone may think of Microsoft and security holes, etc., they do an amazing job w/ their OS and compatibility.
