"Optical Mice are now slowly replacing the conventional ball mice. The advantage of the optical technology over the mechanical technology is that it doesn't require much cleaning. Unlike the ball mice, it doesn't require physical contact so it won't accumulate much dust/dirt which causes the inaccuracy of movement. However, the optical mice isn't that perfect. It performs poorly on smooth or shiny surface. To improve this, Logitech produces a much better sensor technology, the Laser Sensor.
