TMDisplay combines technologies to reduce notebook panel thickness 50%

Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology (TMDisplay) recently announced mass production of an 11.1-inch wide-format low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) TFT LCD panel using a new LED backlighting system for use in notebook PC applications. This approach results in a module with a thickness of just 2.75mm (at the thickest part), which is about one-half the thickness of existing notebook panel modules that use cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlighting.

One of the company’s strategic efforts has been to take advantage of the characteristics of LTPS and other leading-edge technologies. TMDisplay can achieve a very flat LCD display structure by integrating the LCD driving circuits directly onto the surface of the LCD glass while also adapting a thinner LED-based backlighting system. The company has also positioned the printed circuit board (PCB) adjacent to the glass rather than on the backside of the LCD display module and implemented glass polishing techniques. By combining the various approaches, the company claims it has realized an extremely thin and lightweight structure compared with displays using existing CCFL-based backlighting systems, without compromising optical performance requirements.

This new LCD can fully display DVD movies and TV program and motion picture content with high image quality, the company stated. TMDisplay is planning to complete a lineup of extremely thin, lightweight, and low power displays especially designed to support the performance requirements of mobile PC applications.

TMDisplay will exhibit the panel at FPD International 2005, October 19-21 in Yokohama, Japan.
