Kerio to scrap desktop firewall

Kerio will stop offering its Kerio Personal Firewall product as of Dec. 31 but will continue to support existing customers until the end of next year, said James Gudeli, vice president of strategic business relations at the Santa Clara, Calif., company.

The Kerio Personal Firewall is available in a free and paid version, which for $45 adds such features as intrusion detection, remote administration and Web filtering. The software has been downloaded more than 2 million times since it became available in March 2002, the company said.

Its quite a shame since I know a lot of people loved Kerio firewall software. They actually found it to be far better than Zone Alarm.

I heard it was quite an amazing peice of software.

I still use there old Kerio 2.1.5 since it is far better than the 4.x series. Have tested ZA, Jetico, Sygate, and Nortons firewall products but I always return to Kerio, the best rule based firewall. And 2.1.5 was dropped years ago.

My thoughts exactly. I love 2.1.5, and have been using it for the past couple years.

A lot of control in the free version, more than in Zonealarm free.

Kerio will be a sad loss, as it was the firewall of choice for anyone wanting port level comtrol without a high price - though as basic firewall fetures dont need constant updates, the old versions will remain useful for a lot longer than a discontinued antivirus would, especially as the free mode lacks many of the features that would benefit from updates.

Yeah once IPv6 becomes more widely used we will need to upgrade to something else that supports the 128 bit IPs, as well as ICMPv6.

btw: the more I learn about IPv6 the more I like it. higher throughput due to shorter queues without CRC checks at each router and no fragmentation at intermediate nodes since the MSS is 576. I just hope someone makes somethiong as elegant as Kerio 2.1.5.
