The Warriors Reviewed @ SFGate
For once, a film-based video game that isn't a complete waste of your time and money.
"The Warriors," a 1979 movie about New York gangs, is remembered mostly by its handful of immortal quotes. If you're between the ages of 25 and 45, chances are good you have at least one friend who likes to drink too much Coors, clink three bottles together and chant, "War-ee-ores! Come out and play-ee-ay!" (It's usually the same friend who speaks in dialogue from "Caddyshack" and has the theme from "The A-Team" programmed as a cell phone ring tone.) But older fans will recall that the Walter Hill-directed movie was also a very controversial film, carrying the same undeserved blame for society's ills that Grand Theft Auto and other mature-rated video games receive today. It's more than a little ironic that a new Warriors game was released last week, during a peak of politician outrage toward violent games. Gamers will find solace in the fact that the remake is quite good and makes a nearly unprecedented effort to honor its source material. While every video game made into a movie has been bad and most movies made into video games are equally pathetic, the Warriors stands out because it isn't total garbage. Instead of that familiar ripped-off feeling you get when buying a movie game that's filled with bugs, you'll walk away hoping the Wild Bunch, Mad Max and maybe Assault on Precinct 13 are in the works as well. __________ Read More / Source: SFGate |
