Promise Technology FastTrak SX4000 Review

Today ClubOC takes a step in a new direction as they review a product that is unlike anything they have had in their labs before, the Promise Technology FastTrak SX4000 Four-Channel Ultra ATA RAID 5 Host Adapter. Targeted towards workstations and servers, the SX4000 is designed to bring something to your business that you may not be use to, a low cost solution for full featured RAID! Here's a clip from the review:

Quote:
All I can say is wow, what a difference! The Promise FastTrak SX4000 comes back to smoke the HTP372 controller, and does so with slower hard drives! Take a look at the maximum read speed of 83,063kps. Notice the obvious peeks and valleys in the way the data is transferred? This looks like to me that the 256mb buffer is doing it's job at producing superior burst rates. So why didn't we see these burst rates on the 32 bit PCI slot? Obviously, the SX4000 is designed to take advantage of the superior bandwidth of a 64 bit PCI slot, even though it is compatible with both 32 and 64 bit slots. Only until now does the SX4000 show us it's true colors!"

ToshiroOC is on a distinguished road

I am most definitely going to get one of these, one of the new monstrous Maxtor hard drives, a new mobo with 64 bit PCI slots, a new CPU, and some new ram soon... though the new CPU/ram is probably going to be nixed soon. Thing is, I have 4 hard drives that I don't trust, and so I manually mirror a lot of my stuff across them - but no more! I can use this, without a doubt...
