O&O Defrag V8.0 Professional Edition @ Neowin
Disk fragmentation occurs when the operating system is not able to allocate enough contiguous space to store a complete file as a unit, but instead puts parts of it in gaps between other files (usually gaps that exist because they previously held a file that the operating system has since deleted or because the operating system allocated more space than was needed for the file to begin with). With the size of disk drives growing in capacity at an ever increasing rate, the performance loss due to fragmentation increases twice with each doubling of drive capacity. Larger files and greater numbers of files also contribute to fragmentation and consequently performance loss. Defragmentation restores a drive to its original speed by moving the data around within the free space available on the drive, filling in the gaps and reducing or eliminating fragmentation. Disk defragmenting is one of the easiest maintenance procedures that you can perform to keep your system running smoothly and efficiently.

I agree wholeheartedly that having a 3rd party disk defragmenter is THE way to go. I personally use DisKeeper from Executive Software. V9 I believe. I was blown away and amazed @ the results. I've set it to defrag every morning @ 5AM. Having a defragger that restructures the file layout makes a BIG diff in using Windows Search and bootup of the OS. I think the visual item that made my jaw drop was Windows startup. You know how the green bar usually goes all th way across 1 time or 2 times, well after using DisKeeper it takes 2 lil bars 2!!!
I was just amazed. I can literally reboot in under 10 sec. Anyways, just my experience after making the move away from WinDefrag.

PerfectDisk for me. Used to use DisKeeper though.

I use O&O, have for years, its a great program, and very affordable. I think all the progs do about the same thing, they all work better than the windows one.

I've been beta testing the new version of Diskeeper 10 the last few weeks and prepare yourselves for some great changes (that's about all I'm allowed to say at this point, but it is much more robust and has more features than Diskeeper 9.0 Professional). Since I'm under NDA I can't say more but when the time is right, I'll be glad to show my own results in testing, etc.

One thing I hate about all these is they install (and run) a bunch of services and startup programs by default. I only defrag manually so I don't need all that extra stuff taking up memory. So I go in and disable all the startup programs and set all the services to manual instead of automatic. Then when I want to defrag I run a batch file that starts up the appropriate services and kills them after the defrag is done. Wish they would just have an option to enable you to set the thing to run manually only and disable all the extra processes ... and leave the memory for other programs ... like games

O&O doesn't install any services that I noticed. It give you the option to run the automatics defrag, but I don't have it on.

PerfectDisk has two services, if I recall correctly. Can't remember about DisKeeper, but Acronis True Image installs 2 startup programs and a service. If you don't disable both startup programs one of them will automatically re-enable the service next time you boot. Ugh.

wow, what a pain in the ass that is. Any system with a gig or more of RAM and you wont notice it, but that does seem pretty crappy.
