Waterloo (Ontario) - The second Intel-based BlackBerry release came from Research in Motion, Ltd., yesterday, this time for its native Canadian market. The BlackBerry 8700r, announced jointly with carrier Rogers Wireless, will be the Canadian cousin of the 8700c,
which was released last week for Cingular Wireless customers.
It is essentially the same device as the 8700c, but with the capability to access Rogers' Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) network, making the 8700r the first Canadian BlackBerry to support EDGE networks. The unit features Intel's "Hermon" PXA901 handheld processor, clocked at a relatively slow 312 MHz, plus 64 Mb of flash memory and 16 additional megabytes of SDRAM. Optimum battery performance - which was called into question for the 8700c in the wake of the PXA901's lower clock speed - appears normal, with an 1100 mAhr lithium cell providing up to four hours of full power, fully charged.
