Konfabulator got a ton of attention when it was first released for Windows. The Internet soap opera that went on between Pixoria and Apple certainly helped with this, but it also detracted a bit from a number of similar, preexisting products. Stardock's DesktopX is perhaps the oldest of this group. It has existed (at least in concept) since the mid-90s, when IBM was going to use OpenDoc to add similar features to OS/2 Warp 5. DesktopX 1.0 was released in 2000.
