Gartner to Windows 2000 Users: Prepare For Vista Or Die
Companies running Windows 2000 on the desktop need to start preparing for Windows Vista, or they may find themselves stuck with an older operating system no longer supported by Microsoft Corp., a research firm said Monday.
Corporations using Windows XP, however, are in better shape and can plan for a slow rollout versus the "forklift" migration that's the destiny of Windows 2000 organizations, Gartner Inc. said. __________ Read More / Source: TechWeb |

Why?
When it's no longer supported, it won't suddenly die, and if all the systems are behind appropriate firewall hardware, then any vulnerabilities should be minimized. Of coarse, it would also be fair to say that... Companies tired of Microsoft's ploicy of forcing upgrades by planned obsolescence, should consider switching to Linux and openoffice, where they can choose to buy whatever level of technical support they need, while upgrade and additional deployments can be made with no licencing costs. |

Well, first off... there are a lot of companies that were still using Windows NT 4 and how long did microsoft support that? Something like 9 years right? Companies are not going to be just "forced" into moving to vista. Most companies won't even meet the hardware requirements.
Companies that don't see a need in upgrading will just pay Microsoft to support the OS just like they did with NT 4. I just don't see people taking a leap from 2000 to Vista considering the amount of applications that Vista will break. It's gonna take a long while before most companies even let users test it. |

i agree ed. we have seen this type of prediction before every win rollout. never meant much before, does not mean much now.
