Consumer IPv6 rolled out in Japan
Broadband and dial-up Internet users in Japan are getting IPv6 months, perhaps years ahead of their American counterparts. For 300 yen, or about 3 US dollars, customers will receive multiple IPv6 addresses for their household. Users will need to have Windows XP Service Pack 2 and a free network access utility installed, according to an NTT Communications announcement.
Back in 1995, Internet experts predicted that available addresses in the IPv4 addressing space would run out at some point. At the time, the 32-bit address space provided more than 4.2 billion unique IPs, which has been exhausted in a rapid pace. Private IP addressing and Network Address Translation slowed down the need for more addresses, but it was clear that a new standard had to be developed. An RFC proposal was submitted to create a new 128-bit protocol called IPv6.
