Hauppauge Branches Out With 'Stick'

The latest evolution in TV Tuners is the ultra portable stick design. We’ve already seen a few from the likes of Compro, but when sector Mac Daddy Hauppauge announced its first offering in the new format we thought we’d take a look.

Due out at the end of the month, the WinTV HVR-900 is a nifty little bundle of tricks no larger than a typical lighter. It sports a USB2.0 interface and can receive both analogue and digital TV, digital radio and has inbuilt support for Freeview, giving users access to a potential 40 channels.

Time shifting capabilities are also included meaning users have the ability to pause and rewind live TV, while programmes can be recorded onto hard disk or even directly to DVD. Compression is good if not outstanding with a single hour consuming approximately 1.6GB of space, though with a high gain aerial supplied in the box at least you won’t be saving hours of static. The technologically challenged shouldn’t be put off either, since the software has an automated setup and a generous two year warranty comes as standard if you are prepared to fork over the £74.99 (incl. VAT) asking price. When TV tuners first appeared Hauppauge was considered the gold standard. There are considerably more players in the market now, but the HVR-900 shows this old dog still has plenty of tricks.
