IO Data ships hard drives with virus unawares

IO Data announced that a selected bunch of their recently shipped HDP-U series of anti-shock hard drives has a preloaded virus. Those who bought the HDP-U80, HDP-U60, and HDP-U40 series should be on the alert against a Trojan-style virus by the name of WORM_TOMPAI.A or W32/Tompai-A. If you are affected, please use any decent anti-virus software on your drive to remove it. Alternatively, you can exchange the HDD after removal of the virus. Check out the serial numbers of affected units after the jump. Via Tech Japan

Please note that the "xx" at the end of the serial number denotes any two alphanumeric characters.

• HDP-U40: YBS0000001xx~YBS0005520xx
• HDP-U60: YBT0000001xx~YBT000100xx
• HDP-U80: YBV0000001xx~YBV0002480xx

Come again? You want me to clean the drive before I exchange it? Um.. yeah, thanks, but how 'bout I exchange the drive now, and not after possibley exposing my computer to a virus?

Ok, ok, I'm being picky on words, but that's just the way I read it.

External drives, so perhaps they are preformatted and carry a utility set (containing the virus).

And yes, why would you need to exchange AFTER removing the virus - I think that's probably a translation error!
