The industry is in for a gaming crash

With all the hoopla surrounding the Xbox 360 launch, the impending release of the PS3 and the Revolution, things couldn't be better right?

Mainstream media is recognising gaming as something that a wider demographic than goths-with-guns(tm) and overweight basement dwellers do, and the industry is raking in more money than Hollywood. The problem is that they are facing the same problems as the moribund entertainment industry, and we could be on the verge of another 80s style crash.

We need gaming to crash for a while so it can rebuild itself. All everything is right now is cross console gaming where no one wins. They need to make most games system exclusive that way money and time does not have to be wasted porting it. Game dev's really need to step it up a notch like in the old days. I think we just get lazier as time goes by.

Man, that was a good read. Finally there is one article on The Inquirer that actually makes sense.

That said, I am scared to buy any games these days. Any game that requires a cd key (and most pc games do) cannot be returned once the shrinkwrap is opened. A lot of people say to get them at wal-mart because they will take them back, but I would rather companies set up a game station with ISO images of all new PC games on them so that I can try them first. Yes, some of you will say play the demo, but not all games have one.

Anyway, I have seen the quality of games going down for a long while. Companies need to stop producing crap just to earn some fast cash. I don't buy into the hype and the recent xbox-360 videos I have seen were nothing special. For instance, the console lock up video with Project Gotham Racing; it looked just like a game you would play on pc. So much for "next gen"

blackdog is on a distinguished road

A crash may also do something about the costs of hardware(specifically video cards) as long as the demand is there the cost of them will continue to be artificially high. Doesn't cost anywhere near $650.00(cdn) to make a high end Ati or Nvidia graphics card but the demand is there so they will charge it and we will buy it because it means so much to have a few fps more. I seen an article one time that suggested that games aren't really using all the power of gpu's just that manufacturers do let the cards go to their full potential.
