Military space programs may survive review
Major U.S. Air Force space programs are unlikely to be canceled despite a review that found most remain over budget and behind schedule, analysts and industry sources said this week.
Instead, the government would slow down the schedule for some satellite programs to allow further work on key technologies, and it would pump in extra funds for other programs to keep schedules on track, these sources said. "Although there was pressure...to eliminate a major satellite program, as of today no decision has been made to cancel any of the programs," said Loren Thompson, senior defense analyst with the Virginia-based Lexington Institute. Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon are heavily involved in U.S. military space programs that include satellites to detect incoming missiles, track weather, relay communications and keep tabs on enemies. "A great deal of work has already been done to put these programs back on track ," said one industry executive who asked not to be named. "But the government has also injected a bit of reality into the development aspect of the programs to make sure that they're going to be successful." ____________ Read More / Source: News.com
