“Black Friday” notebook sales outpaced desktop PCs for first time in US

PCs made impressive sales gains during the 2005 Black Friday week, which ended November 26, 2005. The notebook segment led desktop PCs in unit sales for the first time ever during the holiday period, with 52% of total PC sales going to the notebook segment, according to Current Analysis.

The US retail sales of PCs enjoyed an overall increase of 35% in unit sales and 11% growth in revenues, compared to the Black Friday week in 2004, when unit sales of PCs increased by only 7% and 3% in revenues, said the research firm.

Notebooks led the charge within the PC market, with an on-year jump of 48.6% in unit sales and 21% in revenues during Black Friday week of this year, Current Analysis stated.

The desktop PC segment experienced an on-year rise of 23% in unit sales during the 2005 Black Friday week, but a 4% slide in revenues due to falling prices and aggressive holiday promotions, the research firm found.
