DH Review: Logitech G5 Laser Mouse

The latest in our Xmas reviews comes courtesy of Grace in the shape of the Logitech G5 mouse, a corded alternative to our recent Logitech G7 article.

The adjustable weight is one of the prime features of the mouse, and very likely a world’s first. By opening the metallic box, you will find eight 4.5gr weights and eight 1.7gr weights. Given that the weight cartridge can take up to eight weights as well, the weight is adjustable from 1.7gr up to 36gr, in 1.7gr steps. Talk about precision! This way, you can adjust the weight of the mouse to your liking and muscular strength. A lighter mouse will be easier to use, especially for long periods of time. A heavier mouse will be more precise and give a better feeling, but it will tire you much quicker. You can adjust the weight to achieve the perfect balance between those two for your own hand.

Pretty cool mouse... I hope sometime soon they come out with a smaller ambidextrous version of ANY of their nicer gaming mice.

Laid my hand on a 518 a little time ago and found it to be too light, so weights for corded mice seems like a good idea. Most cordless are probably heavy enough with the battery, like my MX1000. However I kinda feel like it's a bit heavier in the rear than I would like and the weight compartment on the G5 is also way back. I guess this feeling comes from all the years spent with ball mice, and that my brain will eventually adjust. s

It isn't as bad as you might think, i aactually found it not better having one as i switched my side scroll buttons to back and forward. I haven't used my 'back' button since i got use to the side scroll buttons. And its actually easier, you don't have to reach with the thumb to hit the buttons

i love my g5

Yeah you are proberly right, got to try IRL.

All though with my mx518, my thumb matches perfectly the mouse4 and mouse5 button, so i dont have to reach for them

If the mouse supported 1000Hz polling, I'd be sold, but the highest it goes is 500Hz. This is strange considering the MX518 can do 1000Hz (I think). So I'll be waiting for the next one, or maybe a firmware update to switch from my Diamondback.

Um I don't think so, I believethe MX518 uses a standard 125Hz.

It doesn't have to be for left-handed people. A design like my Microsoft Intellimouse Optical is fit for use with both hands.

Yes I know ive a few ambidextrous mice (for example apple have been making them for years), but my point was, why dont companies make mice SPECIFICALLY for left handed people? obviously they wouldnt sell as many as right handed mice however im sure dedicated gamers who are left handed would appreciate a mice specifically designed with the ergonomics to suit their hand shape.

Well I have both the MX1000 and the G7, the G7 is an overall better mouse, finer tracking and more options for resolution changes which arent as gimmicky as they sound. The shape is personal preference but I cant say I can feel much difference tbh. Only negative is the appalling battery life of the G7, I get a day from each pack... not a major issue as it takes 10-20 seconds to change over but its annoying its so often.

Nice review guys, I had a feeling it was coming after the G7 But after using two gens of cordless Logitech mice(MX700&1000) I find the piece of mind of a corded mouse to be priceless (WoW marathons are a real killer to batteries). Also the tracking improvement over the MX1000 is most noticable and very welcome. Great mouse overall and my fav weight setup is six 1.7g weights down the sides(3 on each side)

Zardon, do you still use the Icemat II?

BTW, just wondering if you folks the lastest firmware for this mouse?

K, just asked because the tracking of the G5/G7 are supposed to not do well on those pads.

Interesting, cant honestly say ive noticed any difference with the mats ive used. Then again I never had problems with the famous MX1000 tracking issues.

me neither, but I bought my mx1000 after they'd been out a while, and wasn't that issue fixed in a later revision?
