DV Expo: Alienware shows off laptop with switchable graphics

Alienware is now aiming laptops at the budget consumer by rolling out their m5500i laptop. At the DV Expo West in the Los Angeles Convention Center, Alienware's Product Marketing Manager Linda Roberds showed off the upcoming m5500i laptop, which starts at around $1000. This 15.4 inch screen laptop can have up to a 1920 X 1200 resolution screen and is powered by the latest Pentium M processors.

Roberds brought along a pre-production model of the laptop. The device can equipped with Pentium M processors up to the 780 version(2.26 GHz) and 2 GByte of RAM. Graphics is powered by either an integrated Intel GMA 900 video chip or an external 128 or 256 MByte Nvidia GeForce Go MXM 6600.

The m5500i chassis is also used with Alienware's MJ-12 workstation class laptop. One interesting feature of the MJ-12 laptop, which Roberds showed off, is a small switch in the front that can disable the external graphics card. Roberds explained that power users don't need top of the line graphics all the time and can switch from using the high-power Nvidia card to the integrated Intel video chip to increase the battery running time of the notebook.

Users can place pre-orders for the notebook now. Shipping of the device will gebin (sic) later this month, Roberds said.
