ATI X1800XT Tradeup competition winner!

As I posted yesterday final judging was held within ATI and they had resident hardware guru Rick Osbourne verify the oldest card submitted to us.

The winner is KELSTON who had one of the earliest cards ATI ever made still in his possession. Several of the other finalists cards STILL work, even though they are 20 years old! That certainly is testament to ATI's top drawer build quality.

Rick Osbourne ATI: "His Graphics Solution card carries the CW16800-A chip. This was the first ASIC used on the Graphics Solution. All the other submissions contain CW16800-B chips or later.

It is interesting to note that the ASIC on Kelston’s card is in a socket. It is not soldered to the board. This was another trend of the very early Graphics Solution cards. It allowed the board to be built before ASIC’s were received from the foundry. The chip could be added to the cards prior to burn in and final test. The socket was a little more expensive but you reduced the time to get product out the door when your gating item is the ASIC."

This competition was the brainchild of ATI European PR Manager Chris Hook and has proven to be very popular within the community, so special thanks to him.

Kelston you have email so please be sure to reply and congratulations! For those of you who missed the gallery posted yesterday please head over here for a small selection of the thousands of entries we had.

I'm happy to be able to properly honor this old graphics veteran. I mean, I think I was getting negative frames per second on the DH main page

Also I meant to say if that graphics solution card is still working in a system, drop me a mail, ATI are interested in finding out if any of the oldest cards are still working.

If it does drop me a mail and I can put you in touch with someone in ATI, thanks!
