Samsung to boost DRAM output by 50% in 2003

by Jane Wang, source: Digitimes
-----
With low visibility on future demand, Samsung Electronics initially estimates that its DRAM output in 2003 will grow about 50% from 2002, in line with expected growth in demand, sources said. Samsung produced 1.3 billion DRAM die in 2002.

The forecast was based primarily on Samsung’s lead in 0.11-micron production, fortified by its steady increase in 12-inch production. The DRAM maker expects to begin small-volume 0.11-micron production by the end of the first quarter and volume production in the second half, said sources. It also plans to turn out 7,000-8,000 12-inch wafers per month this year, leading 12-inch production to account for 15% of total output in 2003.

While a 50% increase is not the biggest supply increase projected among global DRAM makers, any increase from the world’s largest DRAM supplier would have a significant impact on the industry.

Citing market research firms, DRAM industry sources say that overall industry supply will grow about 60% this year.
