AMD announces desktop processor shortages

Advanced Micro Devices Ltd. has sent letters to some of its partners stating that supplies of certain CPUs, such as the Athlon 64 3500+ and 3800+, the dual-core Athlon 64 3800+ and the low-end Sempron 2600+ and 2800+ may be in short supply during the winter season. It expects to solve supply issues with its desktop processors some time in the first quarter of 2006.

"AMD is experiencing unprecedented demand for our desktop processors and this unprecedented demand has depleted our supply of packaging components," stated a spokeswoman for the company.

The packing components are the materials that actually house the CPU silicon on the chip. AMD is working with third-party packing component suppliers to ease the shortage. The company has stated that supplies of the silicon itself have not been a problem.
