The Underclocking Experiment @ PCstats

"We never know if the people actually buying the hardware care about its overclocking potential, but as computer journalists and enthusiasts, we know we have to test it out. This got us thinking though; what about under-clocking? Most modern processors and motherboards can just as easily run under a rated speed as it can run over... but is there a point to this? Well possibly."

actually the whole idea of underclocking has been done.. i've been asked to build a Passive (fanless) system.. although it's a little difficult at first to consider buying a highend chip just to underclock it and lower the voltage just to make it quiete and runable under nearly under any enviroment..... kinda at first irked me just a bit if it were my machine... but hey, it's not..

In any case, my first rig i built like this was a T-Bird... rated 1200mhz.... setup a rather average sized heatink on it... and got a powerful PSU with no fan... End result was roughly running 900mhz (300mhz slower)... with a voltage that was rather quite low.... average cpu temp was probably sub 35s...

Problem i ran into is the motherboard would refuse to let the system run for more then a few split seconds due to no fan speed detected... so i just got a very large fan that was excessively low rpm..... Told the guy it was nessary, even just as "safety" at least to have a bit of movement.... 1500rpm 120mm fan.....

i must say.... moving my mouse across the mouse pad was louder then the machine

Would have been nice to have decibel ratings as well as comparing this to a "stock" machine of comparable power. A p3 or something.
