Alienware announced a new sub-$1000 notebook that comes with a 14-inch screen in a 4.5 lb package. For a base price $900, the new Sentia m3400 is pretty much a naked system that quickly accelerates in price when typical components that are expected in notebooks today are added.
Standard equipment includes a Celeron M 370 (1.5 GHz) processor, 256 MB memory, a 40 GB hard drive, a CD-RW drive and a 14-inch TFT LCD that enables a 1280x768 screen resolution. Wi-Fi adds $60, a Pentium M chip at least $135, a 60 GB hard drive about $50, 512 MB memory $90 and a DVD burner $80, which lifts the price slightly above $1300. There is no problem outfitting the notebook with high-end components such as a 2.26 GHz processor, up to 2 GB memory and a 120 GB hard drive - which means that the m3400 tops out at more than $2600.
The m3400 will be shipping on January 23, according to Alienware's website.
