Chipset makers warn of 1Q CPU oversupply

"Chipset vendors stated that Intel estimates it will ship 50 million CPUs in the first quarter of this year, while chipset supply for the Intel platform will only total 40 million units, according to a report in the Chinese-language Commercial Times.

The report cites chipset vendors as stating AMD expects to ship 20-30 million CPUs in the first half of this year.

PC shipments for the year will total 220 million units, the chipset vendors added.

Another Commercial Times report stated that Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) estimates it will ship 30 million chipsets this year, thanks to increased orders from Intel. SiS expects its 661-series chipset shipment to double sequentially this year, and its 662 version has started sampling with customers including Intel and Intel related OEM partners.

SiS also expects its 770 chipset, which is slated to begin sampling at the end of this month, will be a strong contributor to its chipset shipments this year."
