DH Review: Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro

Steve "Chaos" Ruxton has taken a look at a behemoth of a cooler from Artic Cooling:

Well it is time to have a look at a new CPU cooler from Arctic Cooling - the new Freezer 64 Pro. This cooler is built specifically for the AMD Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2 Dual core line of processors. Most of you assuredly have heard of Arctic Cooling and some may be using their famous line of VGA Silencer coolers. They also make high quality PC Cases and cooling fans.

it's nice, even though I'm not big into overclocking my CPU i'm sure it would stand up without breaking a sweat

Zardon, nice review. I have the cooler installed on my FX-53 running on a DFI NF4 SLI-D. On this mobo the cooler cannot be installed to blow the air to the front or to the back of the case...only up or down. I guess the DFI design is not a reference NF4 design and is the only one that has this issue.

That being said, this cooler is great. Temps (from stock) are lower and the fan is quieter.

This may be a shot in the dark, but does anyone know if this cooler fits on the Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe mobo? Many reviews state that some coolers won't fit on that Asus mobo because of the placement of the heatpipes on the mobo. I'm interested in this cooler as well as the mobo, but I need to know if they work together before I go and spend the money.

Certainly, a massive heatsink, but performance is excellent too!

Good review ..

I still think desighns like this are less then optuimal, as in they could be better

EDIT:

my question is this: why does most cooler MFG still think we have our PC
setup like this: http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/4897/10wq1.jpg
when they desighn thier coolers. Lest it looks that way!

When its obviously clear 95% of them are mounted like this:
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/3420/23mu1.jpg

one woulwould think ther would be a a sizeable difference

good looking chunk of metal, altho it does look like it ought to overstrain a weak motherboard tray or something. Impressive none the less.

They don't. Why would you think that? If it's because of the "heat-pipes need to be horizontal" thing, it doesn't mean the entire cooler should be horizontal, just that when installed the cooler should be aligned so the heatpipes are left and right, not top and bottom.

I bought the beast yesterday. My Opteron clocked @2.7GHz never goes over 50, even after 11 hours of Stress Prime 2004, whereas with stock cooler it went to 59 after 10 minutes of playing games

And when it blows with full speed, it's audible, but the noise is actually pleasant.

Anyone have any idea how this thing would work with an ASUS A8N Sli Deluxe and a 7800GTX? I've read some nice reviews, and this one was great, but I don't want interference between the card and cooler. Anyone have a similar setup?

It's quite a bit lighter than the Cooler Master Jet 4 so I don't think it's all that bad.

I was very surprised at the performance and the weight is not that bad since only the heatpipes and base are copper. All of the fins are aluminum.

Thumbs Down!

Is the fan attached to the heatsink made of rubber or plastic? It looks kind of flimsy from the pictures I've seen. Anyway, I'm quite happy with my Zalman, so I'll be recommending those to my friends instead of this.

How can you recommend Zalman if you haven't tried the Freezer?

the fan is molded plastic and is quite sturdy, it's a decieving design, because of the non traditional frame it just looks not as sturdy

Arctic Freezer Pro 64 on Asus A8n32-SLI...

To answer a question asked twice in this group... It doesn't work. Just started building my system using motherboard and cooler mentioned. Problem is not the heatpipes, but the placement of the memory modules.

I use Corsair TWINX2048-3500LLPRO modules and the fan is eating them! It actually ends up above the modules. With this particular modules, it is too low.

Looking at it (have not connected the cooler yet, just tried loosely), I do not think any memory module would fit.

UPDATE: Put the question to Asus and got a reply (which was actually talking about something else) that point me into the right direction. Although the manual states use A1 and B1 when using 2 modules, the QVL actually shows that you can use either A1-B1 or A2-B2 combination. In any case, when using A2-B2, you should just be able to place the Freezer 64 Pro. Will update this when I get it in.
