Pantech seeks to raise US handset sales

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - South Korean cell phone maker Pantech hopes to raise U.S. handset sales by up to 43 percent this year despite major cuts by its biggest client in the market, a senior executive said on Friday, adding the group is in talks for new deals.

Moon Song, president and chief executive of Pantech unit Pantech&Curitel Communications said Pantech aims to raise U.S. handset shipments to 9.5 million to 10 million in 2006 from an estimated 7 million in 2005, even as manufacturing client UTStarcom Inc. phases out its business with the company.

Song declined to comment on potential partners.
