Microsoft and British Sky Broadcasting Group, most commonly known as BSkyB, have hooked up to bring on-demand video to the PCs of eight million broadband subscribers in the UK. According to Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, the venture, along with others the software giant is pursuing, represents the clarion call for the end of television as consumers have known it.
Beginning on Tuesday, the partnership will place BSkyB's content in the hands of broadband subscribers using Microsoft's Media Center operating system. The on-demand capabilities will give consumers the option of watching what they want, when they want to watch it. Subscribers will have access to and be able to download hundreds of movies and sports clips.
"We're working with BSkyB ... who's done a lot of innovative stuff [in the UK] and they'll be setting up through our alliance a video on-demand capability ... for Media Center customers," Gates said during his keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show last week. "They've got over eight million subscribers in the UK who will be able to do those downloads and use those great capabilities."
