BenQ aims to ship over 50 million handsets in 2006

BenQ aims to ship more than 50 million handsets in 2006 by introducing as many as 30 new models to the global market, according to the company’s president, Sheaffer Lee.

BenQ’s overall handset shipments totaled 15 million units in the October-December period of last year, the first quarter of operation following BenQ’s acquisition of Siemens AG’s mobile phone unit, Lee indicated.

While the global handset market as a whole is in for strong growth this year, the markets in Europe and China hold the highest growth potential, Lee asserted.

BenQ plans to expand the size of its R&D teams in Taiwan and China, to about 1,000 each from the current 500-600 persons, respectively, in addition to the 800-900 person team in Europe the company inherited from Siemens, Lee noted.
