Intel upset over Apple ads

To coincide with the release of Intel Core Duo-based systems, Apple has rolled out a new ad campaign featuring the use of Intel CPUs. Apparently Intel isn't too happy with the new ads though, which suggest that up until Apple came along, Intel CPUs have been used in boring PCs:

Apple's television ads for its new Macs boast that for years, Intel's chips have been "trapped inside PCs--dull little boxes, dutifully performing dull little tasks." Now, the voiceover proclaims, the Intel processor will finally be set free.

Of course, that's not exactly the way Intel would put it. "Never would we characterize our customers that way," Intel Vice President Deborah Conrad said in an interview. Conrad said that Intel cooperated with Apple for some particulars of the TV spot, but added, "We didn't know what the end result was going to be."

Firing Squad left off a big, and important, piece of that quote. From the original LA Times article a few days ago:

Quote:
"It's tongue-in-cheek, it's a cool ad," Conrad said. "It doesn't mean we agree that all our customers are making boring little boxes."
"It's a cool ad" doesn't sound to upset to me.

I get the feeling the LA Times comment was before she got some input from higher ups, who probably wanted to calm HP, Dell, etc.

I think the "Never would we characterize our customers that way", also by Conrad, is probably the current line from Intel. After all, who buys the most CPUs, right?

Here's the ad, BTW
