Arima lands entry-level notebook order from HP, says paper

Arima Computer recently secured a new notebook order from Hewlett-Packard (HP), with shipments slated for this year, according to today’s Chinese-language Economic Daily News. The HP notebooks covered by the order are entry-level models with a 12.1-inch widescreen LCD display, aimed at the Asia-Pacific market, indicated the paper.

Arima resumed working with HP in 2004, after a short hiatus due to disagreements on pricing, with shipments totaling 100,000 units. In 2005, the paper estimates that Arima shipped 150,000 HP notebooks. In addition to HP, Arima maintains a stable contract-manufacturing relationship with Gateway, which also places orders with Quanta Computer, the paper added.

Arima declined to comment on the report, citing customer confidentiality.

The new order may help Arima enhance its contract-manufacturing relationship with HP, whose major contract manufacturers include all of the top-five notebook makers in Taiwan.

Arima is expected to ship 1.35-1.45 million notebooks in 2006, up from an estimate of one million units for last year, sources at the company said.
