Widescreen models to account for 60% of notebook LCD panels in 2006

Notebook panel shipments in 2006 will hit 76 million units, with widescreen models expected to outpace the traditional (4:3) segment by grabbing 60% of overall shipments, according to a recent report from DisplaySearch. By 2007, shipments for widescreen notebooks are likely to take 70% of the market as TFT LCD panel makers aggressively push widescreen panels into the mainstream.

Global TFT LCD panel shipments for notebooks totaled 62 million units in 2005, up 32% from 47 million in 2004, according to the report. The strong demand was boosted by sales of low-cost notebooks and increasing shipments of widescreen models, said the research firm.

Korean-based Samsung Electronics, LG.Philips LCD were the top two notebook panel suppliers during 2005, with respective market shares of 25% and 22%, followed by Taiwan-based maker Quanta Display, which took 13% of the market.
