Can Vista Save PC Gaming?

In 2005, PC game sales slumped from $1.1 billion in 2004 to $953 million in 2005, according to market research firm NPD Intellect. Meanwhile, console games sales climbed to $4.1 billion. So PC gaming is doomed, right?

Before PC gamers throw themselves off their balconies, there are some shortcomings in NPD's approach to counting sales figures.

Today, NPD simply counts boxed retail sales. What this means is that all the dollars generated by World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, EverQuest and other massively multiplayer games aren't counted. Those numbers are probably well north of $500 million.
