ZoneLabs Releases Beta of 64-bit Free Firewall

At the RSA Security Conference Tuesday ZoneLabs announced the public beta release of a 64-bit version of their popular free ZoneAlarm firewall.

According to Zonelabs, this is "the first 64-bit Windows firewall available free to customers". When ZoneAlarm 64 becomes generally available "in the spring", 64-bit computing will get just a bit safer.

"We are very pleased to extend our product line to include firewall protection for 64-bit PCs," said Laura Yecies, general manager of Zone Labs and vice president at Check Point, in a statement. "A dual-layer firewall is the most essential piece of the security to protect against hackers and their nefarious schemes."

In many cases, a malware application written for 32-bit Windows just won't run under 64-bit Windows, but this is not a universal truth. ZoneLabs points out that the Sober worm affected machines running XP64, as did the more recent Blackworm virus. At present, viruses specific to the 64-bit platform exist as proofs of concept; it's only a matter of time before the appearance of functional 64-bit malware in the wild.
