Activision ordered not to show "misleading" Call of Duty ads again

The UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld complaints from three television viewers that adverts depicting scenes from Activision title Call of Duty 2 and its current generation console counterpart CoD2: Big Red One were misleading, and declared that they must not be shown again in their present forms.

The adjudication, published today, is likely to send shockwaves through the industry as it focuses on the question of whether pre-rendered footage is an acceptable representation of a computer game - in its defence, Activision didn't argue that it was, but rather that using pre-rendered footage was "common practice".

Finally someone has said something and got attention for it...

IMO, to many games are shown as having superior excellent graphics... and when you finally get the game it's the ugliest look POS ever seen.

Mostly this always ALWAYS happens on the playstation console.. where they show you nothing but a prerender CG slick film on tv.... and absalutely zero content of the actual game in action...

Xbox games typically do this but do put something in there occasionally with actual game content..

Gamecube, rarely ever has ANY prerendered stuff.

I'm not bashing the ones that have a game released for all consoles, but typically built for the PS2 or Xbox....

About time too...I remember the ads but I don't remember seeing a 'not in game footage' disclaimer on them...

IMO, even with an disclaimer saying this is not ingame footage and is not how the game is played or how it'll look or anything....

Theres a difference between teasers and then outright trailers...

Teasers are typically anything goes.... short and sweet....

Trailers should have at LEAST 50% of the time used, of Game footage (be it full screen or 1/4 the screen)

It's even more sad when PS2 owners don't learn... i've got a friend that bought a ps2 and the games.... and everytime a new game is on tv, he runs out and buys it cause he figures it looks great and or looks fun, and gets it home and fires it up. And every time, says it nothing at all like what they make it out to be (disappointed every time)

poor him.... and all others out there like him.
