'V-Chip 2.0' Turns On In March

Beginning on March 15, the FCC says it will require all new products with digital television receivers – including TVs, video recorders and set-top boxes – to incorporate parental control capabilities by way of a new "open" version of the V-chip that can be reprogrammed to adapt to changing standards.

The V-chip, a small device that allowed televisions to filter out content, was first introduced as part of the 1996 Telecommunications Act. As of Jan. 1, 2000, all analog televisions sold in the U.S. include a V-chip. Now, according to an FCC mandate, digital televisions and other products with digital receivers in them will be required to include V-chip capabilities, together with a new programmable interface.
