Re: News/rumor about Larrabee
i still am fairly confident that intel has licensed some powervr tech that is being used to construct the larrabee...
I also think that larrabee while initially won't be able to outperform some of the top graphics cards available at launch, it will however be able to out muscle them with endurance and stamina. So while it won't be give above 90 fps for example, it won't be suffering from massive drops and lows sustaining an average framerate that will make people really thing twice. Cause no one likes go "yay, i got the highest FPS" only to walk around a corner and have the lowest. Sustained fps.... that's what people want. And if the suckers got the multi core solution to power realtime ray tracing..... should be interesting

Re: News/rumor about Larrabee
Interesting and I think it would be a good thing to have more than two parties competing in the video card market. I remember Voodoo and Matrox well.
The GTX 285 is a nice card if it's close to that Intel is thinking in the right direction

Re: News/rumor about Larrabee
PowerVR had excellent competition.. they WERE beating the snot out of the competition with the kyro 2 considering you could get a product for half or 1/3rd the price for a product that either almost matched, or in some cases surpassed the competitions higherend products. It was like in todays standards, paying the price of a HD4370 and getting the benefits and performance levels of a HD4830
Nvidia got so upset over it they had a campaign specifically setup to badmouth powervr.. and look where powervr is today, they've likely got as many if not more of their products covering the world. from the iphone to a number of other cell phones, airport displays.. and so forth.

Re: News/rumor about Larrabee
I think what we've learned is that campaigning directly against your competitor doesn't really kill them in most cases, it just makes them very successful in other fields.

Re: News/rumor about Larrabee
The Kryo II was a great card, no doubt about it, I still have mine. Coming late to market with their next series of cards wasn't Nvidia's doing though. With licensing issues, limited self space (only CompUSA sold them here), limited visibility they needed to make sure they came out on time with new cards and they didn't. Like I said, the cards were great but it was kind of their own undoing in the PC market. Had they been able to make other vender deals other then just Hercules or VisionTek (think that was the other company) I think they would have done a lot better.
As much as I don't really care for Intel, if they are using VR tech on their cards, I'll be looking at the reviews that's for sure. |

Re: News/rumor about Larrabee
actually ST MICRO halting it all and shutting it down was powerVRs show stopper in the pc desktop market....
reguardless powervr hasn't be out of the market at all considering they are producing more products video wise then most would care to even take a guess at

Re: News/rumor about Larrabee
You are correct that they are still very active, I really do wish they'd hit the desktop market again but who knows, we'll see. Maybe Intel has licensed some of the tech but I can't see Intel promoting that fact. Up until now, they've been promoting it as something all their own and for them to actually say that they have licensed the tech through a third party is to much for their egos I think.
All of their products can be found here though Imagination Technologies - Developing and Licensing IP cores for Graphics, Video, Communications and Processing and click on the PowerVR links. They are into a bunch of stuff still. |
