now i HAVE to mod my 360! 56K warning

well....it happened to me. i got the "red ring of death" around the power button. i suspect something that controls the fan speed is to blame. it used to sound like my stock x850 fan(like an f-16) and now it's barely audible. low and behold my warranty is up (all 90 days of it

) so i did a lil homework(especially after obliterating my last processor for not doing so) and found an article of a dude who did what i had considered doing long before i started having problems. but here is what i did. im starting @ assembly and working forward.
even if ur xbox works great....it's still kinda cool to see what's inside. seeing as i have nothing to lose and i've been wanting to mod it ever since i've gotten it. im gonna cut a window and paint it....not sure what color yet. and more than likely water cool it(when the funds arise) perhaps a bad ass cold cathode kit

im getting excited thinking about it.

1) here is everything disassembled and laid out on my bed. (i was too anxious to get camera whilest taking everything apart)

3) next is the heat sinc for the GPU. look how dinky it is. should be deeper. but the disc drive is directly above it, so they had to make it low profile. hence the larger surface area.

4) these are the retaining clips that hold the sincs to the chips from the back of the mobo. odd design. there ought to be a little more tension, perhaps some springs. it feels like the sincs were too loose.

5) a lil bit blurry, but the CPU is on the left and the GPU is on the right. what is the 2nd die for? does anyone know? if i'm not mistake it is a shared memory die.

10) FINETO!!! it's back together and awaiting power and a prayer. note the "cooling" system. the plastic duct-like thing directs air THRU the cpu sinc, and all is good, but for the gpu, it just butts up against the sinc and seeing the the sinc is open faced doesn't really cool it all that well. it would have been better for team xbox to have made the duct so it extended over the entire area of the sinc, so air would actually be forced to travel over it.

it fired right up and i actually got to play some NFS: MW for 15 minutes. ( approx. 14:50 minutes longer than before

i just played it for 30 minutes and no freeze up. it got to where after it started locking up, it wouldn't even boot into the dashboard. the mod thing is certainly gonna happen. just gotta scrape and pinch my pennies. i already have some plexi for the window. and a dremel itching to snack on plastic and metal. i have seen some modded xbox's and getting some ideas.

alrighty. here it is as promised.(although 2 days late) here is the dvd drive mod so far. i did this with a dremel. i haven't filed it yet though. i surprised myself that i cut it so damn straight. go me!!

oh, pay no attention to the pencil marks. that's just me math. I'm gonna paint everything yet. plus im still planning / awaiting my watercooling system.

and here is the case after i cut out for my windows. originally i was gonna leave an "X" holding the "XBOX 360" in the center but it would have taken too much window space. so i decided to just make two windows. keeping the "XBOX 360" i have plans for that later.

i cut the plexi today. took me 2 tries on the lower one trying to get just the right fit around the "MICROSOFT" in the lower right hand corner. but i nailed the 2nd try. i haven't taken the film off yet because i still have to drill the holes and it's recommended that u leave it on so the plexi doesn't split/crack/shatter. that'd suk ass!

the package fairy(aka fed-ex) came and left me a present(1st of 3) today. here is what i got so far. here is my radiator. isn't she purty? i went with this one because frankly i liked the way it looks. i am gonna have to do something about the orange fan. it's gonna clash with my paint scheme. perhaps painting it will suffice.
