I got a HP Pavilion dv2025nr for $78 with a three year warranty from bestbuy (haha I love their 3 year lemon policy) and I'm covered by the new warranty in case I do something bad to my laptop. (I could drop it off a cliff and it still would be covered...) I really like it, but I would REALLY like it if I could play battlefield 2 or farcry with a better framerate. Its specs are:
1.6 Ghz Turion X2 TL50 GeForce 6150 (128mb ded., another 128mb shared, so sorta psuedo 256mb) native 1280x800 res. Other versions of the dv2000 series are only 32mb ded., with the rest shared, just so no one gets the two mixed up. I think. 1GB DDR2 4200 The board is based off the nForce Go 430 chipset Here is the point though... there are no options for overclocking the CPU in the Bios, but I know I could crank it up to 2ghz pretty easily because while monitoring the Temps, this thing never get hot. I mean like 40ish under load and on Always On settings. Other very similar laptops have TL58s and 60s run at 1.8 and 2.0, at a very reasonable temp, so I think this CPU could at least push 1.8. The 6150 typically runs into the 80s under super heavy load, (like battlefield 2 or a shader intensive game) which is not all together horrible for a laptop chip, but is still warm. The main problem with it is that it only has 2 pixel pipes, and 1 vertex. (I think) I don't beleive that any more can be unlocked to make it 6200 Go-ish (which would be nicer at around 4 pipes) but it still could be pushed a bit more from its default 425mhz core clock. Now that I have stated my situation, what does everyone think? I have moderate experience overclocking desktop components, but OCing laptops is a bit new to me. (My Presarion 2100 didn't like to be OCed caus it was hot as HELL) Should I install nTune, or will that even allow me to do anything? Will Coolbits allow me to OC? The real mystery for me is OCing my CPU. I'm not sure what to do with BIOS having no voltage or clockrate options. I had a little run with Clockgen, and could OC the PCIe bus succesfully, but the CPU Clockrate changes don't seem to affect the actual clock rate. Any recommendations would be appreciated. |
