How much further should I go?
Hi, I just got a XP 1700+ today, together with Abit's NF7. All I did was overclock the FSB to 167, and it's now running at 1.8+GHz. Hmm.. Should I go further? I haven't unlocked the CPU yet and the cooler used is some weird Cooler Master's... Any program I can use to check the temperatures? Any help will be appreciated, thanks =].
By the way, how do I check the processor's stepping and stuff without taking out the processor itself..?

I would think the motherboard would come with some windows software to check temps and stuff too-- maybe not?

Well, I oc mine to about 1.6ghz and it never goes above 46C at full load-
If it goes past 50 you should get a better fan and some arctic silver 3 to put on the cpu/hsf. keep in mind some motherboards have different ways of measuring the temps. so mine being at 45 might be alot higher or lower on other people's motherboards in actual temps. Mine runs at 39c to 42c at idle. Mine also has a temp sensor that actually comes up and touches the back of the cpu itself, others have a sensor on the motherboard, so I've been told. But the cooler the better in any case. Arctic silver 3 is a must for any o/c'ing really, it's 12 dollars and is worth every penny. |

I just unlocked it. And I'm now running at 133 x 14, which is around 1.8Ghz. My temp. reads around 43 degrees celsius to 52 degrees celsius. Is that ok? By the way, I tried to o/c it to 2.0Ghz, but it hanged while I was playing CS. Will increasing the cpu voltage help?
By the way, thanks for your help, BWX232.

Yes, increasing the voltage should help make your system stable. Just make sure you stay below, say, 65C.

Hmm.. Thanks a lot. =] I'll go try now. By the way, will using a non-standard FSB speed of say between 140-166 make the system unstable? How much further should I increased the voltage? I tried by 0.025V, but it was still unstable. Will 0.05V work? Thanks =]. By the way, my CPU's running on NF7 =].

Hiya, I increased the voltage to 1.65V, and it's now running stably! Gonna do some more testing by playing games :P. Thanks people! /me happy! Haha. I also have a DDR Voltage option in my bios. It's running at DDR333, with the settings at 6-3-2-2. Will increasing the voltage help me get 6-2-2-2?

i dunno java over 50C is risky It might run ok (for a while) (considering your not getting blue scrrens , crashes, and lockups) but I have seen alot of cpu's with the on chip (level 1 and 2) cache was hosed from a no load temp of 50C and then running the system gameing etc.... it's not the wisest idea
But the chip is suposed to survive up to 70C (but they tend not t make it), then pop good bye cpu!

(just what I've heard)0 it seems to work for me- I run my crucial pc2100 cas 2.5 (default 266mhz) at cas 2 and 280mhz and higher w/ no problems w/ a voltage increase of .1v. I've heard of this ram running alot faster too. If you overclock your video card, try bumping up the voltage a little on that also to see if you can get a faster stable oc. I bump my voltage .1v on my card (from the bios) and it seems to like the extra power when overclocked..

Piece-o-advice
When your CPU/heatsink starts to glow a bit orangey at the tips, clock back just a bit.

Hmm... Thanks for the help everyone =]. It's now running at 133 x 14, approx. 1.8GHz =].
BWX232: It didn't work for me initially... I don't know what I did and then pop, it works. =\ Sorry I can't help. Edit: I still can't make it run at DDR333 at 6-2-2-2 even though I increased the ddr voltage, but I can make it run at DDR400 at 6-3-2-2 ???

I simply changed the multiplier... I read in some forum that Nforce2 m/b unlock the multipliers to 12.5... But I can go up to 20+.. ??? /me is confused. By the way, can someone explain the "CPU Thermal-Throttling" function in the BIOS? What's 50%, 25% and stuff? =[ Thanks =].

Hey syko86?!?!? Is that a1700 Thoroughbred B? Cuz if it is you can prolly hit 2.1 or 2.2 ghz. And to the person who said "get a V11," the SLK-800 is still a much better heatsink than the V11, and costs less (i know it doesn't have a fan, but it still is the better bargain)

Er... How do I check if it's a Thorougbred B? I can't hit 200FSB. Must I change the voltage of somethng...? I read somewhere that it's possible to hit 200 FSB if you mod the PSU.
By the way, thanks for the help everyone =].

Thanks! =] I'm lazy to remove the cooler now. Haha :X. By the way, I managed to get it to 2Ghz (166 x 12) with the cpu voltage at 1.7 (default = 1.6). Is it too high?

Nope, that means you have a Thoroughbred B. You will be happy.

Um, SLK 800 with either a Vantec Tornado (very loud, but effective fan) or ThermalTake Smart Fan II. Or you can just buy some better aftermarket heatsink fan combo....?

The highest I've ever had my 1800xp is 1.78ghz- but I think mine is a palamino. AGNGA = palamino? I need to unlock this damn thing.
Man, It looks like a real nightmare if you want to buy a Tbred "b" and make sure that's what you are getting. *edit-- the cheapest Tbred"B'" I could find at newegg is the 2100xp for $93. The code says it is a Tbred B, but who knows what they will actually send you. *edit- nope, that's not even one- Anybody know a place that sells one (TbredB) that lists the correct code?

Excaliberpc.com shows the computer CORE. So does vibecomputers.com (but that's canada). If you order and T-Bred B from newegg YOU WILL GET A B.

I'll check those other ones out- Getting 2.0ghz or more from an AthlonXP would last me for a couple years- I would be happy with that.

So, you are saying that pretty much without a doubt, that this 60 dollar 1700xp Tbred B HERE would be guaranteed to clock MUCH higher than my palamino 1800xp (if both unlocked) and may even be able to hit 2ghz, possible much higher w/ the proper cooling? If so- this is a no brainer- I paid almost 90 bucks for the CPU I have now a year or so ago and can probably get SOMETHING out of it on E-bay. So it would be almost a free upgrade!

Unfortunately... I only have a GeForce4 MX 440SE =[ =[ =[. Anyway, I'm now running on 11x166, which is also around 1.8GHz. This will give me a better performance than 14x133, right?
Anyway, I tried going all the way to 2.2Ghz (13x166), and it works. I had to increase the voltage to 1.7. But it runs too hot, around 60+ degrees =[. Guess I need better cooling =[.
