Hello newb to video o/c

Well I;ve been over clocking cpus for awhile now but im new to video cards but i got a question I figured I'd drop on you guys. Ok I got a free 9550 256 meg gpu from a friend this week he just upgraded his whole pc he gave the card to me for putting it toghter for him. But im runninng the omega softmod drivers with out fastwrite (current) (and i belive there softmoded) and I tried to run ATITool .24 (current also) but when i try to run max i sit there and watch and keep moving the mouse I dont get atrifact errors but my system halts (freezes) after it goes so far its diffrent everytime and the same goes for the max memory. But I''ve been digging around theses forums and hardocp's forums I havnt found anything relevent to my problem. But any help would be alsome also if you got some good reads for me to learn about overlcocking gpus please post I like to know as much as possible.

ahh yea im running a 1500+ amd (o/c @ 1900+), 512 ddr 233mhz, 2x raid 500 gig hdds 22 inch neovo lcd, and of course the ATI 9550 256 meg card.

thanx yawlz

Answer: don't use ATITool's Find Max thing. Overclock manually, increasing by a bit, then testing for crashing/artifacts, then if there are none, increasing the clocks a bit more and so on.

BTW, it crashes for me too. Think it only works properly with later GFX cards.

Hmm.. Well, if you're using ATITool, does it display the correct (default) clocks when you first open it? If so, then just try manually dragging the sliders/typing in a higher clock speed. Don't go too much higher at once though.

If ATITool doesn't work, then maybe try some other ATI overclocking tool.. ATI Tray Tool is good - also has some other settings and you can use it instead of Catalyst Control Center.

Not on stock cooling I wouldn't reccomend it unless you run really cool temperatures.

You may need a LITTLE more (as in only .05V more) to foster stability in an extreme overclocking situation, but generally the best policy is just to go as far as you can on stock voltage then call it a day until you get some better aftermarket cooling on the card.

Dynex is nowhere near AS5 in thermal conductivity.
AS5 is about 90% silver and Dynex is less than 50%. I have seen actual lab test results comparing the two. Finding the article again has proved impossible because the net is so polluted. I would never stick Dynex on anything you are trying to keep cool.

Also,
The Omega 9500pro softmod doesn't work with the 9550. There are no extra pipes there to unlock. The 9550 is a totally different core than the 9500pro which used the same core as the 9700pro.
