are they i heard that the new boards including nforce have a software trick to avoid the lock on this new cpus is this true and if so is it enabled or do you have to enable it

Yes, what you said is pretty much accurate, although there is no trigger in the bios to make it enabled. All you have to do is simply change the multiplier in the bios at your own will. The motherboard and bios will do the rest.

Essentially this is nice because it saves the hassle of having to actually physically modify the cpu, and risk damaging it. Also, you can play around with the FSB (Front Side Bus) to a much higher extent, as the more you lower the multiplier, the less stress there is on the cpu and memory.

The chipsets that support this are KT333 and above and the nforce2 chipset.

say does it limit it to a multi of 13 or higher like with the palmino

Some boards have a problem doing this....ie: your cores stock multiplier is 11 like mine and you want to go to 13, some boards have a problem doing this correctly. Same applies in reverse if stock multiplier is 13 or above, some won't adjust it below 13 correctly. Alot of the newer KT400 and Nforce2 boards don't have this problem from what I have read, but my KT3 Ultra2 does. I wasn't worried about multipliers above 12.5 at the time and still am not for now. 10x190 works just fine and the board does it with no modification of the CPU, although I don't recommend MSI for the hardcore overclocker due to VERY limited Vcore adjustments (will only let you go .2 over with out modification). Most of the newer boards that I have read reviews on can all make the 12.5>13 - 13>12.5 transition with no problem, but I would double check before considering purchasing a new board.

I know that the KT333 don't unlock them, atleast not the one's I had and Asus has started to limit the multipliers to 13 at the lowest wit their newest bios. Most KT400/NF2 boards do give you full control over the cpu if its'a Tbred or Barton core.
