Max Overclock PC3200 DDR @ 2.8v?

Basically I was planning to build a new system but am virtually broke (but had a good time getting there.

Anyhow to save money I will upgrade what I have. I want to double my RAM to 2x1GB PC3200 on Dual Channel and overclock keeping the RAM at 1:1 with the CPU (currently at 14x243MHz stock voltage). I am limited by my mobo which will only rais the RAM voltage to 2.8v max.

So...I am currently looking at Corsair http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=MY-079-CS or Muskin HP3200 2-3-2-6.

I want, if at all possible, to get the RAM up to 236-250MHz at max 2.8volts. Is that possible? Has anyone had any PC3200 that successfully managed this overclock? Are there any other alternatives that will do the job?

I also plan to get the HIS X1950 512MB for AGP (faster core & memory than the Sapphire model)

Please advise and help....thanks

I have not been keeping up to date with chip types being released in 1GB modules, but since there are PC4000 (250 MHz) modules available, it is definately a possibility.

Are you looking at PC3200 instead of PC4000 because of the price difference?

I know the modules I run (and others using the same chips) will not do the speeds you are looking for. They do 2-3-2-5 at 200 MHz, but nobody gets past 235 MHz or so with relaxed timings.

Thanks for your comments zelig.

The price difference is negligible - maybe £10 ($20). I would like to overclock PC3200 just for kicks - PC4000 would be boring! Also, I would then have to raise the voltage on the CPU to cope with higher speed and I worry about the heat. I'm at about 52deg c at full load already with the overclock I have.

Okay, so if 235 gets me to about 3.3MHz CPU with 1:1 RAM ratio thats not too bad. But does anybody know if the Corsair or Mushkin sticks I mentioned go to 235 or above at 2.8v max? Or do you know any others that will? Oh yeah, if I have to relax the timings a small bit then so be it. My understanding is that 1:1 with (slightly) relaxed timings should still be quick.

Disclaimer: My recent DDR ram experience is almost entirely with AMD platforms, so I do not have much of an idea of how ram works differently on Intel builds, or how dividers, timings and speed affect performance.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...ad.php?t=50010
Checking here and on the DFI street forums gives nothing showing that either PC3200 kit you tested would be particularly great for overclocking.

If it were me, I would probably go for the PC4000, and then try to tighten up timings past spec if I ended up running them slower than PC4000.

FWIW, my ram tops out around 225 (1 stick does 235 or so, my first set had a stick that did 240, but the other was defective). I am not home atm, but IIRC, I am running around 210 MHz with timings similar to 200 MHz ones.

You won't get 250MHz on 2-3-2-6 out of those Corsairs (which use Samsung TCCD) especially not at 2.8V... TCCD's hate voltage more than 2.8 anyway but you'd definately get 250-275 at 3-3-3-6

Yeah H3X, that's what I thought. Been trying to work out which sticks still use TCCD though. I think it's a choice between the Corsair, Kingston Hyper X or OCZ Platinum EL

It's actually my family tradition to eat guinea pigs for dinner on New Years Eve. Ironic. Please let me know the results of your testing.

BTW, not sure if it is 2.8v max on my mobo. In the bios it just gives options for plus 0.1, 0.2 or 0.3 and I'm assuming it starts at 2.5 or maybe SPD which could mean it goes to 2.9v. I am using latest BIOS. Can't find anything in manual or googling that helps. It's just crappy setting !!!

Edit: Looking forward to entering the X-Universe without the frames stuttering!!

hmm....each MoBo is different. And when i do my OCing, imna have to unplug all of my other HDDs and leave my OS drive plugged in still. I'm hoping I can still hit 4Ghz like i was able to on my old Corsair sticks. I doubt it though. Ahhh....those were the days .

yes, OCing is very addictive indeed. oh, and i forgot. I can't actually do any OCing until i get a gfx card and a KVM switch to build me my work computer. I currently use my rig for work and school and everything, so i need it to be stable. Sometime this week i'll be getting that stuff, so by the end of the week i'll have a fresh install of windows, and i'll be OCing again

I've been googling (and drinking the occasional alcoholic beverage) for the last month without getting the info I'm looking for...until now: http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.a...c=6&t=9782&p=0
It's like 9 months ago but still pretty good.

no, i haven't. I'm debating on whether or not i should get it or not. If i do, it'll hold me over maybe another year or so, but if i don't, i'll be getting an entire new rig late spring/early summer.

Okay. Got it sorted. OCZ ran out of TCCD last summer I think: http://www.ocztechnology.com/aboutocz/news/31

It'll probably be the same all over 'cos Samsung discontinued the line well over a year ago. So now I'm looking for sticks with TCCC or TCC5 chips. I could look for 'used' TCCD on ebay or something but it's not an option I like.

I've emailed OCZ & Corsair to find out which sticks are currently available with these chips. Crucial Ballistix is out of the running as they use Micron chips which, although fast, need voltage which I can't supply.

TCC5s suck for overclocking.

You might look at a local store that doesn't ship high volumes of high end ram and look for the OCZ DDR400 (PC3200) Platinum Rev. 2 chips that are rated 2-2-2-5 (make sure the sticker doesn't have a little Rev. 1.1 on the bottom right in tiny print, that would mean TCC5)

Found some Patriot XBLK 256MB TCCD sticks.
But would only be 1GB total RAM. Not sure. It would still improve my system. Gonna keep looking for now...

you may get 230+mhz out of PC3200 sticks if the timings are set to the loosest possible.... that's a big might though..

My OCZ 2gb kit (1gbx2) rated 2-3-3-8 manages @ 2.85v and 2-3-2-5 manages roughly 212mhz before errors popping up, if set to much looser timings, i can obtain 225mhz before they freak out.

Yeah, I got this reply from RyderOCZ on the OCZ Forum earlier today
Quote:
There are no PC3200 rated sticks that will run 240 or higher in 2 x 1GB....nor are there any in 2 x 512 anymore either.

Samsung TCCx has been discontinued and it never came in 1GB modules.
So, I guess I'm looking for 4 x 512. If only I can find some TCCD like the Patriot XBLK that I found earlier.....

Judas: If it gets to the day when I get paid and I ain't found no TCCD then I probably will go with some quality OCZ. The only problem then comes back to my mobo. The BIOS only allows CPU:RAM ratio of 1:1, 6:5, or 3:2 which means currently with my CPU at 243MHz my Corsair is at DDR403!!! I would have the same problem with the OCZ. Even if I take the CPU to 250MHz I could only clock DDR413 and would have to raise tho volts to the CPU above stock!! I'll probably end up getting PC4000 and going for a small memory underclock with tight timings...sigh....Underclockings not addictive and I feel a little sad having to think like that.

Just checking BTW, does having four RAM slots occupied impact negatively on performance (ie command rates)?

Okay, located 2 x 1GB Dual Channel kits G.Skill TCCD F1-32000DSU2-1GBLC.

I'm happy

Gonna cost me about £40 more than I wanted but never mind...

Just gotta get them before they sell to someone else

Edit: OMG!!! I lost my wallet coming back from pub during christmas and lost my cards. New bank cards have come but still waiting for Visa. It should by Friday but will the G.Skill still be available. OMG!! Why don't they take UK debit cards??? S?%T & F@?K!!! Please pray for me. Why do I drink?

Edit 2: Bought 'em. Had to register with an online payment company first but job done. These sticks are rated to do 2-2-2-5 DDR400 & 2.5-4-4-8 at DDR550. I only want around or below DDR500 (whatever my CPU will go to and still be stable and cool). Can't wait!! Should really improve performance. Now all I want when I get paid at the end of the the month is the X1950 AGP and my upgrade for the next 12 months should be complete. YAAAAAHOOOOO!! Thanks for everyones help and advice BTW. I learnt a helluvalot.
