Help a longtime DH member overclock an Opteron165

I just put in an Opteron 165 processor and want to overclock it to around the X2 4400 (2.2ghz). It's using the retail HSF.

Here's my cpu z info

have you attempted any overclocking yet to find out the max OC with stock volts? tried a slight core volt increases (be careful with stock cooler) .... whats your mobo?

more info would help

I haven't tried anything yet. The highest I want to go is 2.4ghz because that's what my 3500+ was at and I don't have a strong powersupply. Idle temps are 34C which is loads cooler than my previous processor.

Someone gave me the settings for my 3500+ and it was overclocked for a while without issues. My systems specs are on the left. Just tell me the settings to use Zardon and I'll give it a try

Can someone give me the settings for a 2400mhz clock setting? I'd like to keep my ram at stock or 220mhz max it won't go further than that.

When I overclocked my 3500+ I used these settings.

Chipset
Cpu NB Speed 800
CPU NB Width Auto
NB SB Speed 1000
NB SB Width Auto

Overclock mode CPU, Async
cpu 220
pcie 100

I hope that helps so you get an idea what kind of bios settings I have.

Cpu NB Speed 800 <-- Usually this is a multiplier of the HTT, or 4x (200MHz = 1000 MHz) by default. If you're going for 2400 MHz, set this to 600 MHz if available (3x multiplier)

cpu 220 <-- 267 for the HTT here should give you a total cpu speed of 2400 MHz with a 9x multiplier

The 5:6 or 166 MHz memory divider should give you a memory speed of 218 MHz, just under your max.

Those are settings that will bring you to 2400 MHz, assuming all your components can handle the speeds at the given voltages and the ram is configured to run nicely at that speed. I ran these same settings on my 3000+ Winchester for a year or so, took some extra voltage though.

There's my current setup. I'm not sure how far I could have gone with that voltage, I kept having problems getting my ram to run nicely with dividers. Prime95 still conks out after 60 hours or so, but I haven't had the time to fix that.

I pushed the cpu and NB Link speed a little higher do these look safe? I'm surprised it's even working my PS is 380watts and a few years old.

Looks fine, are those temps at idle?

The HT speed doesn't really matter, it isn't close to being used fully, so changing it either way doesn't really affect anything, other than stability if put too high.

Did you need the voltage on the cpu upped in order to boot? I usually let Prime95 run overnight to test for stability with different vcore/speed combinations.

I ran Orthos for a few minutes just to see how quickly it could heat up and it hovered around 60C with both cores at 100%. In actual gaming use I found the temps to be much lower even with one core at full usage it would be around 48C load in a BF2 64man server with all hell breaking loose.

Nah, someone recommended to put the voltage to the highest (1.4) and then once stable lower it as much as possible. I lowered it one notch and might go lower but the temps seem reasonable at this point.

That works I guess, it might cause problems starting at max voltage at my board, it goes up past 2v, among its couple hundred different voltage possibilities.

Funny cpu-z though, it always shows low voltage for me on different computers, and in your pic it's showing above 1.4.

Ya, I lowered the vcore a couple notches but it locked up in a game so I put it back to 1.375V.

At full load on both cores it's around 61C but even during hours of gameplay both cores don't get that stressed so the heat isn't worrying me yet.

What do I need to do to lower it? Go from 800 to 600?

I wouldn't change it if its not causing a prob I find a really good sweet spot on these 939's is 2.5-2.6ghz and your opty will do it if you want it to. Did you happen to write down the stepping numbers before you installed it?

Only if it's causing instability. Here's a screen of mine so far.

Will dropping it to 600 affect the performance at all? I had another lockup tonight while encoding a dvd, both cores were at full load for an hour and it froze so I'm gonna try lowering the HT or raising the Vcore.
