Oops....

Ok, I take a computer repair class in my school and we have been given pieces of crap to work with. The one im currently working on has 256MB Ram, Antec SP 400W PSU, and a Pentium Celeron processor. I recently attempted to overclock the memory and cpu. However, it seems I went a little overboard on the RAM, i have yet to smell anything burning, but the computer no longer posts and I can't get back to the BIOS screen. Any ideas on how I can get back into the BIOS just long enough to reset the timings and voltage settings?

Taking the battery out for 10mins is an easy way to reset the CMOS/BIOS back to factory defaults. Just earth yourself when you do, to avoid any static discharges screwing with the components.

You could try the 'old 240v to 110v ZAIM trick' when you get back to school. LOL

You are taking computer repair classes, but you don't know how to reset the CMOS?

What is wrong with teachers these days?

Oh well, instead of removing the battery, you could get the motherboard's manual (or simply look at it and find it, but that requires a bit of experience at the very least) and find the 'Clear CMOS' jumper or 'CCMOS'. There should be 3 pins with a jumper connecting 1-2 together. Remove it, connect 2-3, leave it like that for 10 seconds, place it back to 1-2 and you are done.

The hard part is to find the CCMOS jumper without a manual, so to speak...the second part takes only 15-20 seconds.

Ok, I believe i can do that without a manual, cuz now that i think of it i know exactly where it is. As for out teacher, well he's a special ed teacher, and only teaches this class so he doesnt get sacked. We mainly just read our textbook and take online tests to get certified.

Ok, I did the jumper trick first, and everything went smoothly, it is now up and running as good as it used to, as good as these celerons can run anyways. Thanks for all the help.

AHAHAH thats the greatest.... you're lucky you didn't get zapped

Of course kids these days with their newfangled autoswitching PSU's never have that happen.

Why back in my day a power supply had its own tap to the local utility, was 8 feet high and made an annoying buzzing noise, and we LIKED it that way!
