680i Thermal Compund
Through all of the reviews on the EVGA 680i motherboards, there have been many complaints of 70+C temps on the north and south bridge. I took off the heatsinks on both to relay some thermal compound to a lovely surprise.
![]() It looks great... untill you look underneath. ![]() A closer look... ![]() ![]() Theat heatsink... ![]() I used Isopropyl first to try to clean them up. I then switched to the Arctic Clean solution set. I was rather impressed. In 60 seconds the thermal crap put on the chipsets was gone nearly instantly. I am an actual believer and the citrus smell was just terrific. Here is a picture of the full amount of Thermal CRAP that was put on these compared to a 3.5g tube of AS5. ![]() If I had a better camera, I would surely take some nicer pictures for everyone. Unfortunately my digital camera is pushing 6 years old, and just sucks. ![]() Cleaned up (lil' blurry again I apologize). Southbridge... Cleana and blurry ![]() Northbridge clean and blurry. ![]() NorthBridge and the heatsinks/heatpipe. At this point they weren't full cleaned up, I went back and cleaned them up in the end. ![]() I reseated them the first time, and pulled them off to double check the contact. They were slightly off due to the fact that there was a butt load of thermal putty on the chipsets. I then bent it just slightly towards the main heatsink. I cleaned everything up, layed down somethermal paste again and they came back up perfectly.

![]() ![]() I used Arctic Silver 5 on both chipsets. Althought AS5 is non conductive it is slightly capacitive. Artic Silver Ceramique is probably the better compound to use in this situation. Finished look ![]() The North and Southbridge now sit at a much safer 32C and 34C respectively. I hope this will help everyone in the future. ps. I don't read Smart Computing, I work for them. EDIT: The pins holding the heatsinks on are spring loaded. You can use pliars, or your fingers to squeeze them in and release them. Have your hand or something on the otherside to catch them. I had one fling across the floor. I then put it back together backwards which took about 1 hour to get everything back to normal.

I did that too.. But it was a pain to remove all the thermal compound. It had spread all over the SMDs and I didnt wanna tear any of them off.

The Arctic Clean and an acid etched brush (horse hair) took care of it very very well. I dabbed up most of it w/ a coffee filter (lint free). It made it so easy and nice. You can look into that as it will dissolve all the gunk even in crevaces.

actually, i'm emailing back and forth this one guy who's card we denied due to physical damage. he said that it's "horseshit" that we denied him because he never "saw" that the card was damaged.
his complaints first started when his profile hadn't been updating and was going to consider it theft. usually it takes people's profile to update within the next business day after recieving the customer's card. then about 3 days later, we tell him his card is denied. and if i ever get you, i'll personally make sure that your board is somehow slowed down in the whole process . jk, jk.

You make a valid point, We could build every homeless man a house with this much putty. 2nd board done, it came out with even more than what my board produced. 80C to 45C. Quite a drop. He doesn't have great airflow

you can use a flash drive, but it's quite tricky. i was looking for the thread on how to do the flash drive method, but the thread has been removed for whatever the reason may be.
well, word of advice, do NOT use the windows method of flashing. otherwise, the next time you boot up your machine, you'll be seeing a pretty "- -" on your LED display there

It isn't w/ a flash drive but its better. I heard some problems going on w/ the flash drives, the CD sounds so much better. As I promised this is as close as it gets.

FWIW, I just replaced the chipset cooler on my motherboard with a Thermalright HR-05 SLI. I had already been using an evercool VGA cooler, but the 40 mm fan was easily the loudest in my system, the passive solution is about the same temp, and much easier on the ears.
