exclamation liquid cooling problem

I just added a liquid cooler system to my comp. just for the cpu. It wasnt made for my mobo but my bro made a new bracket for me at his work and it worked great. now the cpu seems like it is spiking and using up more of the cpu memory than it did before? my cpu is a core 2 duo 2.4 i used to be able to multi task like a mofo cause i have dual monitors now it seems like it is sluggish i dont know if i put on to much thermal stuff or if that would even affect it i dont know i dont want to have to take off my water cooler if there is something else wrong. anyhelp would be great thanks

What kind of temps are you pulling? If it is sluggish, you check for viruses, spyware etc. Unless it was getting way way too hot it shouldn't show signs of being unresponsive.

get speedfan or motherboard monitor to test the temperatures.

If neitheir of those work for you try PC Wizard, it was recommended to me and it's AWESOME (and free, which adds to the awesomeness) http://www.cpuid.org/download/pcw2007_v172.exe

hey guys thanks for the quick responses, however i tried two different applications to monitor my cpu temps and everytime i would go to start the monitor as soon as i clicked on the start my comp would shut down i dont know if dell put this on their mobos or wat, but yeah i was thinking that it couldnt be the cpu heat cause it does right at start up so i will run my virus scan neother suggestions would be great

any reasony why you watercooled a dell? Generally watercooling isn't nesessary unless you overclock your computer, which you cannot do with a dell.

QFT, its a waste of a watercooler, not to mention your time to keep up the maintenance on it. Buy and air cooler, or build your own system if you want to oc.

Useful Info:

Are you overclocking, or running stock?

If you are not, you do not need water cooling it is a waste.

If yes, what sorta overclock are you running, is it stable, and whats load temps that required you to go water cooling just for the processor.

Also your IHS on the chip is probably concave, and the waterblock your using isnt making contact with it, or you didnt apply the TIM right.

Not so Useful: Dude you got a dell.

I've been thinking about this some more but depending on how many spare balls you have when it comes to hardware or how high your income is i don't think i'd try this again without a mobo that fits the watercooler you are trying to fit...
I know that you can buy non-conductive fluids but in my opinion if stock cooling works i'd stick that until you can get a kit that will actually fit your mobo.

anywayz, dissasemble the kit, thank your bro and get it taken back, it isn't worth the risk.
and if the dude behind the counter told you it would fit tell him he's a retard and if you were the one that chose it call yourself a retard ;p

Good luck lol

I dont necessarily think its a problem of the block not fitting the mobo, I think its a problem he isnt making good contact because eitehr his IHS is fubar, the block isnt flat, or he isnt applying the TIM right. But if your only running stock water cooling is such a waste.

i still don't think it's a good idea running an incompatible block with a homemade, no doubt your bro must be good dude but i wouldn't take a risk like that.
but still, i know just how much cooling can increase a system's performance, so even if you pull 30 degrees C on stock air cooling, if you can get it down to 15 or something on water i'd do it, if it was cheap enough
my parts don't generate enough heat though, even when OCd llol

You dont get any more performance from a 2.4ghz chip running 2.4ghz regardless of temps. If that were true, everyone would go phase.

thanks guys for the replys! im not overclocking just yet this was kinda just for looks cause dell gives u that Huge metal case that looks good but after awhile i wanted to do something else to upgrade so it was just for shits and giggles. i didnt cost that much so... and the whole reason my cpu was spiking was cause 1 im running dual monitor and 2 i had a virus so i did a clean reformat and it seems to be working fine other and the messages prior to start up about the cpu and vga fans not being there OWELL thanks again guys

Dual Monitor and a Virus should have no effect on your processors temperature.... You might wanna look into that more.

Yeah, what Punk said.Speedfan's the ticket.....As far as thermal greese goes.Just dab will do ya.Then take a credit card and spread it out.Just a THIN layer, spread out evenly accross the waterblock.Artic Silver is about the best you can get. That stuff that comes with most waterblocks & CPU's is CRAP!

^ i've used Artic Silver 5, and despite it being spread very poorly over my heatsink it works brilliant, my heatsink runs at 3.7k rpm and i get 40\42 degrees C temp, i just spread
it occasionally with anything i find, flat head screwdrivers work good.

and btw, about the thin layer thing, if you make it too thick the heat won't be able to transfer through the thick paste, just enough to make a connection works fine, and try not to remove your heatsink after you've applied the paste since the thermal connection gets worse every time you remove it

As long as the temperatures go down and not up theres no reason why changing a cooler will affect the general performance of your CPU... its 90% likely that something else you did inbetween is the cause of this, and its likely software related.

BTW FWIW: The overclocking you can do on a Dell is in no way warrant for extra cooling of any sort....
